About UL’s lidar remote sensing test site near Amarillo, Texas
UL’s wind test facility is a central United States location built for independent performance verification of lidar and sodar technology. Our mission is to provide convenient service that enables owners and operators to spend less time shipping and testing units overseas and more time using equipment on sites in the United States.
The facility, located in the middle of the Great Plains Wind Corridor, is one of the largest of its kind in the world and is a premiere location for wind testing with an 8.9 m/s average wind speed at a height of 80 meters.
Due to year round favorable wind conditions, the facility is the ideal testing resource for wind turbine manufacturers, component manufacturers, project developers, utilities, and other companies within the wind energy sector.
Comprehensive test package
UL offers a comprehensive remote sensing test package at our site that includes the following services:
- Calibration report according to IEC 6400-12-1 Ed. 2 Annex L
- Data collection, analysis, and processing
- Unit set up, operation, and packaging in original shipping container
- Use of pad site during measurement campaign
- Fully instrumented and calibration certified 130 m met tower
- Operations and maintenance of 130 m met tower
- Grid power for each unit at pad site
- Storage for equipment and shipping materials at UL’s on-site storage facility
- Internet access and use of data collection equipment

Minimize your remote sensing device uncertainty
An uncalibrated remote sending device that has also not been compared to another measurement device cannot be used as the basis for a bankable energy production report when being deployed for the purpose of estimating absolute wind speeds. Campaigns missing post-calibration will suffer from a higher overall uncertainty.
UL follows the methods described in IEC 61400-12-1:2017 Ed. 2 Annex L for quantifying the uncertainty of remote sensing devices. Calibration of remote sensing devices is required for power performance testing and will lower uncertainty for energy production reports, increasing the financeable capital and profitability for development projects.
Note that shipping costs and risk of loss during shipment to and from our site is the responsibility of the client. Troubleshooting for units that do not function properly upon arrival will be charged at a time and materials rate. Delays due to inclement weather are the responsibility of the client.
